Health and Wealth. I’m really worried about when my rent increases next November. I’m working serious overtime now just to pay my rent and bills which is not good for my health. I try to put that situation out of my mind as there is nothing I can do to change things. Whatever happens, happens. Rising rent is something over which I have no control. However as those of you who have been following me for a while I’m doing my best to get control over my health. Eating better. Drinking more water. Taking Vitamin supplements and when possible getting exercise.
What do you do if you can’t sleep at night? Do you count sheep, toss and turn, or get up and try to do something productive?
I work nights so I’m awake. Prior to my changing to the night shift I worked days and suffered with insomnia. I’m a chronic insomniac. I get very little sleep. Also the nature of my job (museum guard) often requires me to be up for 48 hours straight. I catch up on sleep on my days off.

I got to participate in a clothing challenge for Ladies over 50 which most of my readers saw this past weekend. Dressing up in various eclectic outfits was lots of fun and helped boost my self-esteem. It was an exercise meant to uplift our spirits. During the workweek I wear a drab blue museum guard uniform. At the job I’m just another cog in the workplace wheel of machinery. For this fun challenge I got the opportunity to express myself through fashion. I mix and match my Funky Fresh Fashion to please myself and through this expression shows that just because you’re past 50 does not mean you gotta dress drab or plain. I enjoy color because Color Pops and bright colors are uplifting.

Menopause does a number on your hair. Once your estrogen production goes down your skin becomes drier and in many cases for Women your hair thins out or comes out. The Hot Flashes and Night Sweats are pure hell but I’ll leave those for another blog.
Ladies we do not want this. I don’t know about you but the bald look does not look good on me. Our Hair is our Crowning Glory and we need to take care of our precious strands.

Received my bottle of Mineral Rich made by the company Maximum Living!! Mineral Rich is marketed as a Vitamin Supplement/Energy Drink. It is a dietary supplement. I have taken pill vitamins in the past but pills are not my friends. They are often horse pills meaning that they are large and difficult to swallow. Regular pill vitamins also feel like they are getting stuck in my throat which is extremely uncomfortable. I prefer to drink my Vitamins.
I found out about Mineral Rich from the below Naturalista YouTuber. Hopefully my hair will also grow faster and longer which would be a great addition to also getting more energy. I will give this product until end of June/early July then I will give you a hair growth update. My goal is not waist length hair but healthy hair, scalp and skin. When I had my hair in Locs it was down my back to my waist and I could sit on my hair.
Keep in mind that for any health regime to work you must be consistent!! You can’t get fed up and stop after one month telling yourself and others, “This is not working”. You are in your specially selected program for the long haul.
For me even if I can’t get to my Reviv Vitamin clinic for my B 12 shots due to extreme weather I know that I must have alternatives and combos I can rely on.

Taking more control of my physical health. In order to get better and be better I’ve got to do better. Complaining does not help. Whining is useless. Action is needed. Thus I’m going on a Vitamin regime. I think that some of my tiredness and exhaustion may come from not getting enough vitamins. I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired!! Tired of cancelling fun times, parties and events with friends because of being exhausted!! I’m only in my 50s and I don’t want to feel like I’m in my 70s or 80s!!

I’m been shoring up my finances with as much overtime as humanly possible and I’m going to treat myself to a type of Vitamin Spa. One of the many great things about New York City is that everything is available to keep you healthy and strong. All types of options. Some are not covered by insurance. Some are a bit expensive but with careful saving one can make use of the many holistic options New York City offers.
I think an extra dose of B Vitamins, my Ensure drinks, and Moringa Bitters I expect to see some changes by the end of October start of November. Moringa Bitters are sold in many Caribbean and African owned stores in New York. Yes it does taste bitter but so did the Cod Liver Oil my Dad used to make us take when we were kids!! LOL!!
I also eat lots of Yogurt with Probiotics. Mostly for my stomach and to ease my digestion but I’ve noticed a side benefit of eating Yogurt with Probiotics at least twice a day is increased hair growth.

I also have a great Love for the people especially the Ladies from Ghana. Good visit to the gastro doctor today. Basically he wants me on I guess what is now called a Paleo diet. The very thing that most people think is good for you like veggies and fruits causes me extreme gastic distress. Guess I will never become a vegetarian. Also I must stay away from wheat and wheat based products. And worst of All No Chocolate!! Arrgghh!!
My doctor wants me to do both an endoscopy and a colonoscopy Thursday, November 17th. I told him that it would be impossible for me to take time off. The doctor even wrote a note which I will give to H.R. and Dispatch/Mgrs tomorrow insisting that I must have these two procedures so let’s see what happens. Getting days off especially for medical procedures is like being in a fight where your opponent has a gun and you only have a small twig with which to defend yourself. Plus I’m still trying to balance attempting to take care of my medical condition with spending time with Stephen. Gosh it seems I’ll never win. Sigh……
Oh yes my ghetto hoodrat Walgreens on Nostrand and Fulton does not have the special solution I need to drink for the test next week. Go figure!!
Sometimes when I think about all the money I spend on doctors, exams, tests, procedures, various types of shots and injections plus any other kind of medical issues I’m beginning to think that I’m making all my doctors richer than they are now!!
That’s the one thing I dislike about getting older. The older I get the more health issues I have. When I was in my teens, 20s, 30s and early 40s everything was fine. Once I turned 50 it was like a time bomb in my body was set off the disease switch turned on and everything that could go wrong went wrong. Physical chaos. And just think I never smoked, rarely drank and exercised on a regular basis!! Getting older is not for sissies! Ugh!!
It took the Lady gastro nurse two needles sticks and she was still unable to draw blood. Then the man nurse came and he got blood on the 3rd try. They must have taken at least 5 or 6 vials of my blood. Tired. Exhausted. I feel like a Vampire has drained my entire Life essence!
Got up with $80 and now down to Zero bucks. I just got a phone message from the Brooklyn Veterans Hospital for my 1:30 pm doctors appointment which obviously I will not be able to make today. Ran out of funds and none of the subways near me go straight there. I will have to move my VA appt to another day when I have both time and money.
Health care is expensive and time consuming. Yuck!!
Friday I go for my Vitamin Infusion injections which are for me an out of pocket expense Not covered by Health Insurance. Sadly in this country the good old US of A. This is a photo of me at age 42 right before graduating Cum Laude from Marymount Manhattan College. I would say at age 42 I reached my Peak Performance in terms of fitness. Perfect skin, shape, Hair (my Locs went down my back to my butt) stamina and endurance. I was in Excellent Great Shape. Wish I could return to that age and that physical condition.

I’m a Victorious Over-comer in the making! For me the keys to unlock the prison was to Challenge myself. I joined Seven Bell Fitness gym located in Brooklyn in April. Did a Strength test. My trainer said I was in good shape for a 55 year old woman. So psyched I signed up to do 10 lessons. One training per week. My trainer encourages me to push myself. I felt so good after knocking myself out. Endorphin and adrenaline rush!! Do the thing you fear the most.
Yes at 55 these exercises are more difficult for me than when I was 18 and doing Basic Training courtesy of Uncle Sam but I want more for myself. I desire Great Health and I’m gonna make it happen. No time for dissenting voices. I Listen to my true friends who encourage and support me. Yes for the next ten weeks I will be close buddies with Epsom Salts and Ben Gay but I will be a Lean, Mean Fighting Machine!!
I did my time in the Land of Sick & Tired. I’m done and I don’t live there anymore! Breaking out of that prison!! I’m a Fighter. I’m a Warrior and I’m Free!! Ten weeks of pushing it to the max with my personal trainer. Warrior Woman! Still feeling the Endorphin Adrenaline Rush!!
Check out my glowing face after a vigorous workout at Seven Bell Fitness gym. Amazingly even after my personal trainer puts me through my paces and I discover muscles I never knew I had and the endorphin and adrenaline kick in so strongly that when I get home I’m dancing, vacuuming and cleaning house sometimes simultaneously!! These hardcore workouts give me extra energy. I’m not at all tired even after supercharged exercise routines that work my muscle groups.
Going to the gym on a regular basis and working with a personal trainer is bringing results. One of the girls in the Ladies Locker Room who is in her 20s asked me how I got my upper arms in such good condition. She wanted to know specific exercises. Now that is the Bomb when a girl in her 20s is seeking fitness advice from a woman in her 50s!! The Queen Reigns!!
Radiating strength and power after my workout at Seven Bell Fitness in Brooklyn, NY. Guess I’m not too out of shape for a 55 year old Lady, but my goal is that six-pack. Menopause has been very cruel to me, taking away my formerly flat tummy and replacing it with pudge so after working out on my own since October 2013 I knew I had to go hard and join a gym. Went with Seven Bell Gym in April and the improvement has been amazing. I want to be ripped and sculpted. Middle-age does not have to be an obstacle to fitness and it’s never too late to start. Sometime around my 52nd Birthday Alien Body Snatchers had taken my normal hour glass figure and slowly began to replace it with a blobbity blob formless mass. Made the decision to return to the Summer of 42 not 1942 because I was not born or even thought of that year but Age 42 when I was at my physical peak.
I began my unofficial exercise program on Halloween my favorite holiday and my New Birth. Ramped it up in November 2013. I had the good fortune to be invited to a number of Birthday and Holiday parties in November and December and naturally I was on the dance floor at every party! Doing all these regular party favorite dances requires agility and endurance. That’s a workout within itself! Thanks to the Help, Encouragement & Support of two very good friends Matt Velez and Hadiiya Barbel I made my official entry into the Fab Abs Waist Wellness By Hadiiya Barbel program!! Hooray!!
Two Major Benefits that I noticed right off the bat were my back pain was 95% gone and no colds or infections since I began the Ab programs. So Dancing is great but Planking, Crunches/Sit-ups, Leg Lifts, Lunges, Stretches, Squats, and Jumping Jacks are even better. As with any exercise program I modify it to meet my needs. I know I have arthritis and bad knees so I do as much as I can but I try to up the ante every day. It’s not really a Challenge if you can’t increase your reps but I do my increases gradually and slowly. I feel that by the end of next month Feb or early March I should have Fab Abs. No New Years resolutions but achievable Fitness Goals!!
