The Daily Post ~~ Phobia, Shmobia ~~ Public Speaking

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Phobia, Shmobia.”

Phobia, Shmobia

Fears evolve over time. What is one fear you’ve conquered?

Public Speaking. I was terrified of public speaking but in my last job as a manager at a major non-profit I was forced to overcome that fear when the Executive Vice President told me that I was going to give a presentation regarding a proprietary software our company had developed to the city agency that was funding the project. Actually it was a presentation and training in one. When she told me about the presentation of course I said yes and smiled because she was my boss but inside I was quaking like a volcano ready to explode. At first I was thinking of ways to get out of the task then I realized that would not bode well for my career so I buckled down, made a study of the software which was a social services database, created training materials, and dived right in.

When the day of reckoning came I did so well that the higher ups at the city agency came up to me, complimented me and one even said he wished I was working for his city agency! Wow!! Way to go me! A few years later after deciding to return to college for my Bachelor’s degree I had to take a Public Speaking class. Even though it was my job to give in-house and external software trainings the class still made me nervous. However the professor did her best to put everyone at ease and when she saw you had did your homework and were giving the speeches your best she would work with you. I received a B grade in this class.

Now in my current job as a security guard at an art museum I deal with the public every day. No I don’t give speeches but this position has enabled me to step up my communications and customer service skills. Not only must I know the layout of the building and where everything can be found patrons often expect security officers to know something about the art also. In some cases I can provide them with information on the various artworks but if I don’t know I can suggest they take one of the many Free Tours the museum offers. You really have to think on your feet because you deal with visitors from all parts of the world and many different cultures. In fact if giving museum tours were a Paid Union job as opposed to a volunteer position done by docents, I would gladly jump on the bandwagon because I know nearly as much if not more than many of the tour guides. Even though I majored in English I really enjoy art and am constantly trying to self-educate myself on different art genres and styles either by reading books or watching videos about the world’s great artists.

So I’ve come a long way from that petrified young woman who thought she was going to faint in front of an audience. Now I’m a mature self-confident older woman who is happy to help people by sharing knowledge and insight on subjects I love.

If you could have three wishes granted for you alone, what would they be?

  1. Extended continual good health.
  2. Financially free & Independent with all bills fully paid.
  3. Unlimited time with my brother Stephen who has Autism.

What is the most incredible natural venue that you’ve ever seen in person?

The Grand Canyon. Incredible & Amazing!

Is your hair short (total neck and ear showing), medium (covering ears and neck), long (below shoulders) or extra long (at least halfway down your back)?

I currently wear my hair in a medium Afro which is getting longer but Afros tend to grow out and upward, however if my hair got long and heavy enough it would go past my shoulders. Gravity. The longest my hair has been was when I wore it in dred locs, then it went down past my butt. I could actually sit on my hair.

I’ve had people tell me I look like Whoopie Goldberg. I saw her in person and I do not look like her. One of my co-workers said my wild woolly mane makes me look like the singer Macy Gray. Now if only I had the money of all these Black women entertainers I’m supposed to resemble I’d be a very rich woman.

Honey Cone – Want Ads 1970

Time to add some romance to my life. Had one summer fling last year but I’ve decided I don’t want to deal with men in their mid-60s who think they are still players. I ain’t got time for that. I see other women in their mid- to late 50s dating younger men so I do believe I will expand my horizons. Not interested in robbing the cradle but women should have the same options as men have had for many years.

Yes there might be snow on the roof but there is still fire in the furnace! Well not much snow thank’s to L’Oreal Feria!! LOL!! For those women who have not crossed the bridge past 50 romance is not just the domain of the teens, 20 or 30 somethings. Menopause is not the end of one’s sex life or it should not be. Things might slow down but there is always the opportunity to restart one’s engines. Also I’d like to sweat for a better reason than a hot flash! My head still turns when I see a good-looking Bronze brother-man except now my common sense dominates as opposed to my hormones.

Wanted: Young and Single and Free!!  Well not too young. Searching for my Chocolate King from 45 to late 50s. All your mechanics must work without the help of that little blue diamond shaped pill.  I’m not trying to push your old ass offa me after you done had a heart attack!

Financially stable. No romance without finance. Yes I want the flowers, chocolate, spa treatments including hair, hands, feet and all that a true Queen deserves. If you’re ready to obtain. You must maintain. Yes I am worthy! Gigolos hit the door!

Personal hygiene is a must. Ladies you’d be surprised how many men who don’t believe in bathing, deodorant or brushing their teeth think they deserve a mate. No way!

Yes you must believe in God. Going to church every so often won’t hurt. I need a Christian man who is free-spirited and a free thinker. They are not mutually exclusive. Read the Song of Solomon. The most romantic book in the Bible.

Must like to laugh and have a sense of humour.

I take good care of my body and so should you!  I am 50+ Fabulous!!

Louis Jordan Reet, Petite, And Gone

Physically fit. I’m not trying to get next to Quasimodo or the Pillsbury Dough-Boy. If you gotta lift up your gut to find your “package” then I’m not the woman for you. No Jabba the Huts need apply. Your application will be returned marked Rejected in big red letters. Yup! Returned to Sender at address unknown!!  Bald is no problem. Don’t cha just wanna reach out and rub that head? Tell the truth! You know just wanna caress the dome!

Who Loves Ya Baby

Must love cats. Love me. Love my cats. Both of them. Otherwise you won’t be getting anywhere near the other ‘cat.’

I’m ready to be your Ebony Queen. I don’t do side chick nor do I believe in man-sharing. I’m more woman than you might know what to do with. If you have an account with Ashley Madison stay away from me. But then again you’re probably already busted anyway?! Right!

I like to go out and enjoy myself. Life is meant to be lived. I’m ready to travel and see the world. How about you? Curl up with a good book? Better yet curl up with a good woman.

Where are you my African-American King?

If you were a pen, what type, style and color would you be?

A Fountain Pen with purple ink. I often feel like an anachronism. One born out of time, meant to be in another century. As a kid I had some fountain pens and I loved them despite the fact that they could be messy. One just had to learn to tame that ink! LOL!

How many languages do you you speak?

One. English. Took Spanish in High School but that was over 30 years ago! However living in New York does give me opportunities to use my rickety Spanish skills. One day I will master the Spanish language.

Are you a listener or talker?

I listen but really enjoy talking more.

Rather Have:  Which would you rather have, 2 million dollars or true love?

True Love. Uncle Sam would take most of the $2 million leaving me with not much left. However with true love you never know. Perhaps my next man will be a millionaire and I’ll have both Love and Wealth! 🙂  LOL!

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

Being able to spend time outside enjoying New York City and today having fun hiking the Ramble Nature Trails in Central Park.  I’m becoming a Real Rambling Rosie!!  😀 LOL!!  Check out my pictures:  http://roamingurbangypsy.com/2015/09/07/rambling-through-central-park/

Looking forward to my upcoming vacation!! Yessssssss!!!!!!!!  More rambling and exploring the Big Apple!! Booyah!!
