Companion

My animal companions over the years have been the dogs I had when I was growing up along side my fascination much to my mother’s horror, with gerbils. The Gerbils only lasted until I got my first cat named Bonkers sometime during the 1980s. No Bonkers and later his companion Smokey did not eat the gerbils but that was only because my parents moved the gerbils to their bedroom. One day my Dad said to me Deborah your gerbil (by then I was down to one) is not moving.  Taps for the gerbil.

Time went on and eventually I finally left the nest and moved into my own apartment in 1990. My parents had gotten rather attached to both cats and insisted on keeping them. I had visitation rights. Sadly before that decade ended both my parents had gone onto their heavenly reward and my cats came to live with me. Unfortunately cats do not live as long as humans and over the years I’ve had to part with several feline companions.  Currently I had on Purrfect Buddy. That Talented Terrific Tuxedo known as Sylvester.  He is Pawsome!!

My best friend and life time companion is my brother Stephen, an Autism Guy who is my heart, soul, mind and everything to me. As anyone who has followed/subscribed to my blog for any length of time knows Stephen is my whole world. Since our parents died all we have is each other. He accepts me for who I am. I don’t have to wear a mask around him. He is always eager to see me. We are a team that cannot be separated!!  I Love You Stephen Vincent Palmer!!

Childhood

Photos of me, Stephen, my father Edward Gordon Palmer and my Aunts as children. I don’t have any pictures of my Mom Mable Elizabeth Palmer as a child because her family was too poor to afford a camera or have photos taken of them. I have included a picture of my childhood dresser which I’ve had since I was five years old. It came as part of a Vanity set but only this piece survives.

Also shown is a photographer of my paternal Grandfather William Junius Palmer with some of his children taken around 1923 in Mt. Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park) in Harlem. My Dad Edward Palmer is not in this photo because he was born in Feb. 1930. The little boy seated on my Grandfather’s lap who would have been my Uncle died of polio. My grandparents lost at least two boys to this disease. My Dad was the only boy to survive and he was nicknamed Precious.

The photo of my Dad Edward G. Palmer was done in around 1935 by famous Harlem Renaissance photographer James Van Der Zee.   http://www.biography.com/people/james-van-der-zee-9515411

SHARE YOUR WORLD – 2016 WEEK 22 – HOLIDAY EDITION

Every country in the world has lost men and women in some kind of Armed Forces.  When does your country celebrate or mourn their deaths?

Today, May 30th.  Here is some more information, background and origins of Memorial Day.

https://wlhs-ny.org/national-memorial-day-museum/

What is your favorite holiday or holidays?

Halloween!!  I also enjoy Thanksgiving because it involves food!!

How do you celebrate that holiday?

By dressing up!! Last year I was DeBorah the Huntress and Stephen was Robin Hood!!

Gratitude

I know the question was not included but I just wanted to say I’m grateful that I was able to spend time with my brother Stephen and that we were able to enjoy two movies. Both Captain America | Civil War and the X-Men Apocalypse were good action filled films!  I’m also grateful that today I was able to see a performance by Dance Africa a program put on every year at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music).  This year’s featured African country was Senegal. The dancers performed both traditional and modern African Dance! They were outstanding!!

SHARE YOUR WORLD – 2016 WEEK 21

With your answers, please remember we are in the SYW world and which may not always match our reality.

What is your favorite go to beverage?  Water, coffee, tea, coke, soda (non-alcoholic)

Water.  I do have a weakness for Snapples but I try to stick with water.  My body reacts badly to caffeine and sugar. For special occasions I might have a glass of wine but otherwise shun strong drink.

Can you change a car tire?

No. But on the other hand No need to know as I do not own a car and can no longer drive.

Are you a listener or talker?

A little bit of both but I’m trying harder to listen and keep my lips zipped.

Would you rather have no internet or no cell phone?

As I have a developmentally disabled brother I need both. Especially the cell phone. I need the internet for my blogs. There are both Must Haves and cannot do without either!

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

Friends of all faiths, races, nationalities, gay and straight. Looking forward to next weekend when I shall take a day off to spend with Stephen. We plan to see Captain America and X-Men. We also plan to continue with our Joint Sibling Art Collage project.
