Blanking Out

Blank

Blanking out. Something that happens more often as we get older. Those of you over 50 know exactly what I’m talking about. As for the rest of you just wait. You’ll get there.

I’ve been working at the museum for eight years and I can forget the name of a co-worker with whom I’ve worked on a steady basis for seven of those eight years.  Just yesterday I ran into one of the guards, a young lady I see every day. Do you think I remember her name?! No!! However I never forget a face. Lucky for me I was getting off the train so I smiled, waved and we exchanged Happy Hellos. Escaped embarrassment.  Such a nice pleasant young woman.  The last placed I Lived I was there for 22 years yet I still forgot folks names! Or I’d put the wrong name to a face.

Now here’s the Oxymoron. As a museum security guard the visitors expect me to know not only where every piece of art is but how to get there. Fortunately after eight and a half years I know where most of the major most popular most asked for artworks are located and since I’ve been posted in every section of the museum I can tell you how to best access them. No I do not know where every last piece of art the museum owns is located. That would be impossible as much of it is in storage and the paintings are rotated. Security Guards are not human computers.

I seem to have an affinity for paintings.  The first wing I was assigned to was 19th Century Art. At that time I was so bored I memorized not only where every painting was located but the artist and genre, Impressionism, Realism, Post Impressionists, British Romanticism (The Pre-Raphaelites) etc….

Security guards have no say so in where we are posted so I’ve been in the Modern Art wing, the American Wing, African Art, Asian Art, European Sculpture and Decorative Arts.  After listening to the docents give tours I can pretty much give you good background and/or history of artworks located in those sections.  I’m not an expert by far.

The Experts in the Museum are the Curators and the Conservation staff.  Also I’m an English Major not an Art History Major. All I have is on the job knowledge supplemented by reading books and watching videos on art.

Now I’ve also been posted in the Egyptian and Greek sections. Please do not ask me about this art for I will surely draw a Blank. If you are a student Google is your Friend and/or the Museum website/Libraries.  Or better yet Go to the Information Desk because all you’ll get from me is a Blank Look. I don’t spend enough time in these galleries to gain knowledge nor do I wish to do so. I prefer paintings and some sculptures.

When I was a girl my Dad used to say I practiced “Selective Hearing.”  I never seemed to hear him when he was calling me. Especially if he had some task or errand for me to perform. “Deborah! Don’t you hear me?!! Turn down that radio/TV!! Pay attention!!

My Dad did not like to raise his voice and when he did so I knew my ass was grass and I was up shit creek with no oars. In other words I was in serious trouble.  So maybe it’s the same thing with People’s Names and Artworks.  My Middle-Age Senior Brain is practicing Selective Memory!!  LOL!!

All art graphics are from Google unless otherwise stated.

SHARE YOUR WORLD – 2016 WEEK 22 – HOLIDAY EDITION

Every country in the world has lost men and women in some kind of Armed Forces.  When does your country celebrate or mourn their deaths?

Today, May 30th.  Here is some more information, background and origins of Memorial Day.

https://wlhs-ny.org/national-memorial-day-museum/

What is your favorite holiday or holidays?

Halloween!!  I also enjoy Thanksgiving because it involves food!!

How do you celebrate that holiday?

By dressing up!! Last year I was DeBorah the Huntress and Stephen was Robin Hood!!

Gratitude

I know the question was not included but I just wanted to say I’m grateful that I was able to spend time with my brother Stephen and that we were able to enjoy two movies. Both Captain America | Civil War and the X-Men Apocalypse were good action filled films!  I’m also grateful that today I was able to see a performance by Dance Africa a program put on every year at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music).  This year’s featured African country was Senegal. The dancers performed both traditional and modern African Dance! They were outstanding!!

SHARE YOUR WORLD – 2016 WEEK 20

With your answers, please remember we are in the SYW world and which may not always match our reality.

When do you feel most connected with others?

I’m a Loner and an Solitary so it is very rare for me to be or feel connected to others. Rather I’m connected to Nature. I prefer being outdoors in good sunny weather taking photographs. However one instance that stands out for me in terms of connectedness was last January when I attend the New York Paid Family Leave Rally where New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Vice President Joe Biden spoke. The bill just recently became Law in the state of New York and will take effect January 2018. At least I feel like I helped to accomplish something.

What daily habit would you like to introduce to your life?

More Sleep and exercise!!

What one mini-little-adventure would you like to have in the coming week?

That some kind, gentle and generous soul would take me out to the beauty and nail salon. I need to have my hair, fingernails and toenails done!!  Having a Fully Paid Free for Me Day of Beauty would be a wonderful thing!!

List things or events that changed your Life: It could be as simple as a book or meeting a certain person?

  • Committing my Life to Jesus Christ.
  • Joining the military and serving in the United States Army.
  • The deaths of my Beloved parents Edward & Mable Palmer.
  • Having and surviving a minor stroke at age 49.

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I am grateful that my court case went well and had a successful and victorious outcome. I’m also grateful for meeting and dancing with the Lost Samurai! That was fun!!

As for this upcoming week looking forward to just getting through the work week with the least amount of pain and making it to the weekend.

The Nubian Ninja Stings America

Most people who know me know that I’m an Opinionated Black Woman. I’m not ashamed to say that I’m a Liberal/Progressive on most issues. I support Women’s Rights including a Woman’s right to choose. Yes I’m Pro-Choice. I also support my Gay and Lesbian family, friends and co-workers. I have no shame in my game and no filters. Also I don’t care about what people think of me. Only my opinion of me matters to me.  As I’ve said before and I will continue to say I validate myself. I don’t look for support from anyone or anybody else.
As an African-American Woman I know what it is to be the target of assumptions. During the eight years I’ve been at my current job (I’m a museum security guard) it has been white men (however white women can be just as ignorant) who assume that because I’m a Black Woman I must be a drug dealer or a prostitute. Some whites right away look at the color of my skin and my gender and just figure she’s a slut and a hoodrat.
Some feel that because I’m Black that gives them the right to touch me. For some strange reason I cannot fathom white people have some sort of sick fascination with African hair. Well I’ve got news for you. I’m not running a petting zoo so unless I know you and know you very well Don’t Touch Me and Keep Your hands to Yourself. Let me say this loud and clear, I Do Not Like or Want to be Touched especially by strange white people!!  Observe Personal Space!!
Also I’ve been called everything but a Child of God.
This is the candidate that many white Americans support and want to be the next President of the United States.
Trump. Just another name for a disgusting pervert masquerading as a “Voice of the People” The only people he represents are the KKK, the American Nazi Party and the Christian Identity movement. For those of you who don’t know about these groups. Look it up. Also Donald Trump’s father was a Grand dragon/wizard or whatever idiocy they call themselves of the KKK. Now you understand where he gets his racist, biased, bigoted views.  A male who uses women. Has had numerous failed marriages and businesses. A white male who wants to build walls instead of bridges.
Whites never even consider that I’ve served my country and I’m a United States Army Veteran. I graduated from Marymount Manhattan College with honors. I’ve been working for close to if not 40 years and have always supported myself while taking care of my developmentally disabled brother. Nor do they see me as their Sister in Christ only as a nanny or personal servant. News Flash!! Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben took off the apron and Chef’s hat and now work for Black Lives Matter!!  #BlackLivesMatter
But then again my contributions plus the contributions of my parents, grandparents, great grandparents, great-great grandparents have been negated by most white Americans and Europeans down through history. It is their choice to go by stereotypes, assumptions, stupid politicians, idiot preachers/ministers and corrupted media. Because a person is a certain color, race, nationality, religion (non-Christian) right away they must be some type of criminal or terrorist.
Shame on you America. For you know neither my story nor my song.
However the songs of white Americans/Europeans are constantly celebrated. They celebrate murdering thousands of Native Americans, capturing and enslaving Africans, Jim Crow, years of colonialism against Black and Brown peoples systematically attempting to remove their own indigenous faiths/religions, destruction of native cultures and desecration of native/indigenous lands, using the CIA to prop up dictatorships in foreign countries which have numerous human rights violations.
Tell me Republicans/Conservatives are you really proud of this history?!
As Memorial Day in America is rapidly approaching I will continue speaking on this issue in a future post.

Shadow

When I was a girl My Dad Edward G. Palmer was constantly reciting various radio programs from the 1930s/40s when he was growing up. The Shadow was one of his favorites. Lamont Cranston was The Shadow.
