Where I’ve been and Where I’m Going

August 16th after ten years of service I retired from the museum.

I’ve had the privilege to be surrounded by beautiful lovely wonderful art on a daily basis as well as excellent co-workers who are artists. Being around gifted and talented people stimulated me to start creating my own artworks of Mixed Media Collages and eventually acrylic paintings. This gave me the opportunity to participate and exhibit in several exhibitions.

Some of my paintings and collages:

Now that I’m retired I’ve decided to devote even more focus and determination towards my artwork. Back in April I opened my Etsy Shop.

I’ve also identified a building on Fulton Street near Rockaway Avenue as a potential Art Gallery.

There are many artists in my neighborhood but perhaps they don’t have a place to exhibit and sell their art. I want to change that. Manhattan does not have a monopoly on art galleries.

Brownsville/Bed-Stuy has been classified as working class and of course the neighborhood has it’s share of Homeless Shelters, halfway houses and folks receiving government assistance. Poverty does not have to be an obstacle. If the people here especially the young people have an art center where they can come to create and display their artwork it will not just change the neighborhood but will change their world. Creation gives you a purpose and an element of control over their lives. Here is a clip from the documentary Humble Beauty “Skid Row Artists”

Art Activism

In order to make this happen I’m asking for a donation of $125 or whatever you can afford

This will help me build my base. My foundation. So that I may be a credit and a help to my neighborhood and expand my program to Queens. My future plans are to extend my program to Ghana where a young Ghanaian woman operates a Center for Children and Adults with Autism.

Art Autism and Activism

I’m especially interested in returning art to adults with Autism because my brother Stephen Palmer has Autism. His training Center AABR located in Jamaica, Queens, NY had to lay off the Art Teacher due to budget cuts. AABR has the space. The classroom is available but no Art Teacher. I want to fix that by giving Adults with developmentally disabilities the opportunity to explore their creative abilities.

Below is an example of some art Stephen has created. Once of his favorite artists and influences is Basquiat. Stephen created the photo picture collage at my house during a home visit. I’m determined that Stephen should and must have art in his life therefore when we spend time together we often got to the Brooklyn Museum as well as other New York City area museums. I keep art supplies in my home so Stephen can create to his hearts content. However Stephen’s friends at AABR may not be fortunate to have family or friends to give them an art opportunity. Therefore I intend to rectify this situation.

My desire is that you will be able to make an investment not just in me but in folks who don’t have a voice to give them a voice through art.

Thank you.

Stay in your Lane

Recently I saw this Meme on Instagram.

A Private Life is a Happy Life

Usually I disregard most Memes as they are ridiculous, stupid and ignorant but this one resonated with me.

Over time I’ve been blogging less and less. Sharing less and less despite the cries of people who say my story matters.

In fact I deleted one of my blogs and have begun to delete many of my older posts. Contemplated deleting this blog also but it’s attached to my photography blog Roaming Urban Gypsy so it stays.

There are certain specific issues that I do discuss such as Austim in the hopes that my activism and advocacy will help other families who have developmentally disabled family members.

Of course Veterans since I am one and the ever present racism, bigotry and discrimination because well as a Black Woman in America that’s an every day experience.

However as far as my personal affairs especially concerning relationships, health, medical issues I’ve learned over time my parents expression, Don’t put your business in the street.

When you discuss your personal experiences online you open yourself up to ridicule, scorn and unwanted pity. People are not really empathetic and get off on reading about other people’s troubles so they can I’m better than so and so.

Of course everyone is different. Some people feel that being an open book is cathartic. For me sharing often makes me feel worse not better.

After a falling out with a friend I’ve known for over 35 years I realized that by telling someone I thought I knew, I only set myself up for judgment. As a result I play Public Face/Private Face. Much of the time I say what certain people want or expect to hear because they can’t handle truth. They live in a Disneyfied Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm world and reject any voice that doesn’t correspond to their expectations. Sometimes I will say stuff just to get people out of my face.

I maintain my Silence. For in the past I’ve had many regrets.

Now save for my creative endeavors the best parts of my life are not on social media. In fact I periodically disconnect from social Media. Once I retired last month August I vowed to live in the moment as much as possible. When certain specific folks that I highly respect asked me to share some of my poetic thoughts, photographs and creative moments I was happy to comply.

I still participate in many photography challenges because I enjoy them and I Love sharing, highlighting and showcasing New York city, my hometown.

Be Invisible.

Maintain your Mystery.

Rhysia and TyRhysia

TyRhysia, the implants rickle and stitch said Rhysia as she ran her hands over the pearl size bumps along the side of her face.

Leave them alone Rhysia. They will be removed once we reach homeland base Felinia.

Remember The Ancestor cards yet to be retrieved and activated.

Your uncomfortable internal pearls have a vital role to play in the drama.

But TyRhysia, I want to be a Honeycomb! A Constellation of Honeycombs in the Mouths of Lions.

Hush baby. You will be. You soon will be.

Each of us has a microFantasy to act out.

At which point TyRhysia activated Rhysia sensor pearl cranium implants causing Rhysia to Rhythmically grimple and grackle along the mossy grass fields whilst ejecting spurts of podshoots that ignited into fiery energy bursts.

Deactivating the pearl bead sensors causing Rhysia to collapse into a deep meditative slumber.

Oddly positioned up above in the overhead tree branches which formed a leafy Murphy bed. Lower legs visible occasionally fwipping in and out from celestial island breezes.

Unfolding her massive wings She Who Sees All Gently Hovering Watching over her snoring charge.

Ms. Rhysia you’re innocent as charged. For a crossed eyed Dragon sees straight in its Dreams.

The Spiritual Component of Suffering.

Fasting to gain insight and ultimately relief. Appeasement of a jealous God.

Have you eaten? Are you not afraid that He Who Watches may see yet remain unseen?

Do you know who resides within the Watchtower?

What wandering souls nightly spirits peek out from the Watchtower walls. Eyes searching seeking for inhabitants of small spaces.

Left Eye Aflame Afire. Blurring vision yet powerful innervision. Ability to see inside the minds of All Sentient beings.

Somewhere. Somehow. There is a hidden joke that WordPress calls their customer service representatives, Happiness Engineers.

WordPress is mocking us. If not for the Reader function I would not be able to locate or keep up with other Bloggers.

Life is like a Twin Peaks Doppelganger.
