This is how I spent Wednesday, August 9th. Sun, Sand, Sea & Surf! Coney Island another Happy Place!!
Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY
I had a great day lounging on the beach, walking the Boardwalk and along the sandy beach. It was a gorgeous day. Outstanding weather.
It has been close to 15 years since I last visited Coney Island and there have been lots of changes. The place is really built up with plenty of new shops, stores and restaurants. Much cleaner than in past years. Lots of improvements. Wow!
No. I don’t swim but I did stick my toes in the surf as you will see in the below video. Me and roller-coasters are not friends so no getting on stomach turning rides. Next time I think I might try the Bumper Cars. I always Loved Bumper Cars. Fun. Nothing like a beautiful sunny day filled with Sun, sea, sand and surf!

Espiritu en Fuego/A Fiery Spirit 
I want to go to Coney Island one day. For several reasons, but the main reason is this one. When I was a child we had these novels with the main character called Pietje Bell (Little Pete Bell). He was a street kid in pre war Rotterdam. Rotterdam was almost completely wiped out in the second world war, so this setting means a lot to older fellow countrypeople. When Pietje grows up he is migrating to the US. This particular novel, called ‘Pietje Bell in Amerika’ was published in 1929. I read it in 1965 (appromimately, I don’t recall the excact year) and in it was a description of Coney Island, the rides, the sea, the atmosphere, the food, the hugeness of everything, certainly in the eyes of a young Dutchman, all the way over the big pond, in this new, vast country where the sky is the limit, or at least it may have seemed that way. I was 8 years old. I was in my bed lighting the pages with my torch, under the blankets so I wouldn’t alarm my parents. And I wanted to see Coney Island.
It is beautiful. It has changed a lot since I was a kid and I had not been there in over 10 years. Lots of development. More rides. Different types of games but still a wonderful place to be. Especially in the middle of the week. Saturday and Sunday it gets crowded so that’s why I went on a Wednesday. Less people and greater access to the beach. Walking along the Boardwalk is amazing and incredible. Hopefully one summer you can come to Brooklyn, NY and check out the sights. Lots to see and do.
