Health = Wealth

Like many people when I was younger I took good health for granted. When I was in the US Army I could easily run 2 to 6 miles every morning at 6 am, I did those marches that extended for miles while wearing a 50 lb backpack/rucksack and jump boots. In my teens and 20s I was in peak physical condition. I was still going strong in my 30s at that point the only thing I had to worry about was my adult acne but make-up and visits to the dermatologist plus turning 40 cleared up my skin.

At age 36 after my Dad passed away I was motivated to go back to college and finish. During the course of attending Marymount Manhattan College my Mom lost her battle with cancer but I pressed on. I still had the family support system of my maternal and paternal aunts to encourage me. Physically I was strong as at the time I was going to school I held a full-time job and went to school at nights and on the weekends. My 40s was a decade of accomplishments.

Then BAM!!  Along came the financial crisis and in December 2006 I lost my good job and in due time my health benefits. Fortunately through prayer and constantly reading the New York Times Classified ads I obtained a job as a museum security guard. The money is half what I made prior to that but it was a Union job with benefits. By then I was in my late 40s catching up to 50 and I had been wearing glasses since the age of 26 but I began to notice I was experiencing double vision and other problems with my left eye however as I had no health insurance in late 2007 I had to ignore the problem. Things all came to a head in November 2008 after having a headache and complete loss of vision on the left side of my head. Mind you I’m stubborn. I don’t like doctors or hospitals. However the pain became too much to bear so I told my supervisor and I was rushed to Roosevelt Hospital. At age 49 I had a minor stroke. By the time Jan. 2010 rolled around my vision had gotten so bad that I underwent retina surgery.

Between 2008 and 2015 I was hospitalized numerous times for various ailments. My last hospital experience in 2015 at Kings County Hospital was so horrible and traumatic that I vowed never to return. If you look up Kings County Hospital and patient abuse you’ll get an idea of what I went through. The experience was so terrifying that I still cannot talk or write about it to this day.  I made good on my vow and did not go to any hospital at all in 2016. A minor Victory!! Changes had to be made.

As I’ve gotten older I notice that I’ve begun to have difficulty climbing stairs and I’m totally winded after one flight. That’s another reason I leave early for work because I cannot compete with the students and young people running up and down the subway steps nearly knocking me over. I get off the train, step to the side and let them have at it. I don’t have the stamina I had as a young woman.  This is a sign that I will be moving out of New York City when I retire. The other sign are the rising rents. Sorry but I cannot pay over $1000 per month for rent. The weather is another factor as cold weather is not good for sore achy joints. There are times when I cannot get out of bed. So that means it is time to move on to someplace warmer and friendlier.

Spoke with an Army buddy who lives in Georgia with her husband who has volunteered to help me settle down there once I retire. At least when I move there I will have a support system. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts I am estranged from what few family members I have in New York and they’ve labeled me an outcast persona non grata. Hopefully Stephen will be able to come with me or I will just visit him during the spring and summer months.

Healthy Living Moves

Had a health consultation with a Holistic Healer. I accepted her invitation to live a more healthy and productive lifestyle and God willing I plan to join her group focusing on holistic and organic ways to improve health.

http://www.empressiveherbs.com/

She focuses mostly on Women of African descent but only because Black Americans have high rates of high blood pressure and diabetes. Cancer is also a plague in the African-American community. Ladies of any color or race can join in. Yes I have high blood pressure and I’ve been told by my doctor that my sugar numbers are going up every years so I might get diabetes. Hopefully I can prevent this and not die an early death like my parents. Also if I can get rid of the arthritis without taking all types of horrible pills I’m down with the holistic natural game plan.

Another high note was I stepped up my Vitamin infusion health plan by adding CoQ10+ to my regimen. I have been taking the B 12 shots since last year. I only fell off in Jan. & Feb. because I had several meetings to attend for my brother Stephen. Got back on the Vitamin Infusion wagon early March.  The Vitamin injections do help but like any health strategy you must be consistent.

I’m going to follow this gentleman’s advice. This is the only way that my body will begin to heal. Mr. Infinite Waters is correct.

Share Your World – March 27, 2017

Does your first or middle name have any significance (or were you named after another family member)?

DeBorah is a Biblical name taken from the book of Judges chapters 4 & 5. DeBorah was a Judge over Israel prior to the appointment of kings.

DeBorah is a Hebrew name meaning Queen Bee.

I found this funny humorous definition at the Urban Dictionary. I agree with everything except the “men want me” part. So far no Prince Charming has come along for me in my 58 years of living!! LOL!!  🙂    😀

Hebrew spelling. Also means The Bee and to speak eloquently Deborah’s are usually sophisticated, witty, intelligent with a great sense of humour. Other women are usually jealous of Deborah’s and men want her.
Woah… I met this fantastic woman in this classy art gallery on the weekend her name must be ‘Deborah’
As for my middle name Ann my Mom and her sisters all agreed that any girl children they had would all have the middle name Ann therefore all my female maternal cousins have Ann as their middle name.

Music or silence while working?

When I worked in an office I had a small radio in my cubicle. We were allowed to listen to our music as long as we kept it low. I enjoy music as it uplifts the spirit and makes the day go by faster. Now I work in a Museum which has a restaurant on the lower level so whatever they have on their computer playlist is what I’m compelled to listen to!! No choice!! LOL!!

If you had a special place for your three most special possessions (not including photos, electronics, people or animals), what would they be?

I suppose a Safe Deposit Box. I used to have one and those places are really secure. I remember being accompanied by a bank employee and going through several heavy duty chamber doors that reminded me of the beginning sequence of the old time TV Show Get Smart!!  One of my favorite Old School TV Shows. LOL!!  For you young folks here is the Get Smart theme:

The Never List: What are things you know you never will do?

Bungee Jumping and Hang Gliding!! To tell the truth any Extreme sport. I’m now at the age where I prefer staying safe and secure with my feet solidly on the ground! Also I’m deathly afraid of heights!!

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

As for the upcoming week I’m looking forward to entering and celebrating the month of April and praying that old man winter will finally release his grip on New York.

Serenity Prayer

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ~~ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serenity_Prayer

The Serenity Prayer is the common name for a prayer authored by the American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr[1][2] (1892–1971). The best-known form is:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

Acceptance

The Weather ~~ Something that is out of our control. We can only listen to the weather forecast and prepare ourselves either to go out or stay inside.

Death ~~ A sure thing. We are all gonna die sooner or later. Guaranteed. Another thing we have no control over but we prepare by taking out life insurance so our families will be able to carry on without us, making a will and making our Peace with God in whatever way we worship according to our belief systems.

Taxes ~~ Unavoidable especially in the United States where the working and middle class pay more and the rich and wealthy don’t pay at all!!  Thirty percent of my salary goes to taxes which I would not mind if I could see some improvements being made in the American infrastructure but that is wishful thing!

The New York City Subway system ~~ Over 111 years old and gradually collapsing by leaps and bounds on a daily basis thanks to government neglect and incompetence. The recently opened 2nd Avenue subway took 100 years to complete!! This new line only benefits those who live on the Upper East Side!

The fares go up almost every year yet the service continues to deteriorate. The trains are often old and decrepit. Due to the massive increase in the homeless population people live and sleep inside the subway cars and on the platforms. The poor are always coming through the trains begging for money since the government has more or less given up on those less fortunate. Arguments and fights are commonplace. And as I related in a previous January post sometimes people commit suicide by jumping or walking in front of the fast moving trains knowing that the conductor and motorman cannot stop in time.  Most times it’s like living and riding inside a Charles Dickens novel. The tracks need to be replaced and the signal and switching systems goes out on a regular basis. You may or may not reach your destination. I leave my house two hours ahead of time to get to work.

I suppose the only thing good that I can say about the subway system are the various subway buskers/entertainers that take your mind off the fact that your train is late (actually I’m not sure if the subways are running on any type of schedule at all!) and provide weary commuters with a few moments of happiness.

Travel Blessings: Lost & Found

Travel Blessings:LOST & FOUND

This incident has become fuzzy in my mind over time but I remember it occurred while I was stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY. That would have been around 1980/81.  My MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) was as a 75D aka Personnel Records Specialist. From time to time I was sent TDY (Temporary Duty Assignment) to other bases in a supporting role to soldiers on maneuvers.

Once I was sent to Ft. Polk, LA or as my fellow troops and I liked to call it at the time Ft. Puke!  If you’ve ever been to Louisiana you know it contains a wide variety of scary horrific wildlife and creatures that must be left overs from the prehistoric era. Snakes, scorpions, bats, etc….

Of course once I received my TDY orders and paperwork I packed up my duffel bag thinking that it would meet me on base.  Boy was I wrong! I made it to Ft. Polk but my duffel bad did not. I wound up having to hand wash my underwear as I had no change of clothing.  The Commanding Officer assigned a female officer to take me into town to buy some new clothes until my duffel bag could be located.

Eventually to my great relief the duffel bag was found and once again I had clean uniforms and clothing. Who knows where it had been for between 24 and 48 hours. Perhaps riding around the luggage carousel at the airport aimlessly until a staff person picked it up, contacted the base who had somebody retrieve it so I would not be naked!!
