When I was about 8 years old my cousin took me and some family members to the Apollo in Harlem to see the Original Temptations and Four Tops perform. I was so excited and on my feet for the entire concert!! Their smooth satin voices and the coordinated costumes and dance steps. Dig the Konkoline Pompadour! Woo hoo!! Classic Songs for a Classic time period!!

I remember going to see these guys on the chitlun circuit as a young GI. That was real music back then.

I remember being so cross when I heard this music referred to as cocktail soul. Though these four are firm favourites, Ball of Confusion just stands out ahead of anything else for me. With The Four Tops, they had such brilliant records thanks to Levi Stubbs Jnr. One of the best singers ever to grace a stage. Though I love so much of theirs, especially Walk Away Renee, my all time favourite is I’m in a Different World.
