SHARE YOUR WORLD – 2016 WEEK 7

What are you a “natural” at doing?

Writing and photography.

Would you prefer a one floor house or multiple levels?

One Floor House. As I get older my arthritis is getting worse and my ability to climb stairs is like trying to scale Mt. Everest. I suffer from chronic back pain along with joint pain. My knees and other joints sound like Rice Krispies. You know Snap, Crackle & Pop!

As Lil Abner from the comics used to say, “If I had my ‘Druthers”  My wish would be for a one story one level home with No Stairs.

What was your favorite subject in school?

English and History.

Complete this sentence: If only the rain..

would come when I’m in my house and can stay indoors until it stops!!  Rain, snow and any precipitation is cause for joint pain so who knows I might move to a drier climate once I retire.

Because the Night

Are you a night owl or are you the early bird? What’s your most productive time of day? When do you do your best work?

Insomnia Kitty
Me, Sylvester & Weezer. My cats my night time companions.

I have chronic insomnia so I guess I’m a Night-owl. For a long time I named myself the Midnight Marauder!  I have no idea whether my insomnia is due to menopause hormonal changes, job related stress or just plain aging. Many of my co-workers and friends who are in their 50s or 60s report needed less sleep or being unable to sleep through the night so maybe sleeplessness is just a by product of getting older.

I think I’m also part Vampire because I always want to sleep during the day and stay up at night!  However thanks to my U.S. Army training I still wake up early which is a good thing. I’m never late for work.

I do my best writing at either dusk or dawn. The period between wake-fullness and sleep provides me the most and best inspiration. As for my photography that is a daytime activity. For safety reasons I usually don’t go walking around the city at night taking photos.  However in places that are well policed with lots of people like 34th Street Penn Station or other major hubs then I will whip out my camera.

Now for the musical interlude.

Joy, Peace, Happiness of Soulful Struts

My little Thanksgiving mini-vacation is coming to an end.  I’ve been off from work since Thanksgiving and I had a great time being with Stephen and my New Jersey cousins. That was lots of fun. Always great breaking bread with those we Love.

Friday Stephen and I spend a rather quiet day together and Yes I had him outside walking with me on a Soulful Strut. He rather enjoyed it. Stephen had a big smile on his face as the two of us pumped arms and legs strutting proudly like peacocks along Fulton Street in Brooklyn.  I did not make him walk too far and we did stop so I could purchase him some much need clothing. So he got some goodies out of the deal as well as exercise.  When I retire Spring 2018 I will be taking photos full-time.

I Love My Soulful Struts. Part of my inspiration for taking long leisurely daytime strolls aside from my doctor telling me to exercise was reading the book Wanderlust: A History of Walking by Rebecca Solnit.  Excellent book. I highly recommend reading this book.

Every day I tell God and the Universe that I want to be able to do my Soulful Struts five days a week enabling me to not only get much needed exercise but present me with more photographic opportunities. As many of you know I have a Photography Blog called Roaming Urban Gypsy and that’s what I am, a Roving Street Photographer.

My Dad Edward G. Palmer was an amateur photographer. He used to have his photos made into Kodachrome Kodak slides. I still have the slides many dating back to the early 1950s in my closet. Let’s hope they are not dissolving!!  Dad also specialized in Black & White photos.  This was back in the days of film and having to get that film developed. Daddy had a great day of expertise and would have made an excellent photo-journalist.

I Love taking pictures of my Beloved New York City then showcasing them on Roaming Urban Gypsy.  Whenever I’m in photo mode I feel so happy, joyful and centered.  Anytime I’m doing either writing or photography I feel I’m in my Purpose, my reason for being.  Also the walks exhilarate me.  I can feel those endorphins pumping me up!  Walking exercise and taking pictures gives me a peace of mind and a sense of creativity.

Allow me to share the gems of my photographic excavations!

Blogger With a Cause ~~ The Daily Post

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Blogger With a Cause.”

If your day to day responsibilities were taken care of and you could throw yourself completely behind a cause, what would it be?

I am already an Autism Advocate for my brother Stephen.  See link for New York Times article

However if I was financially free, independently wealthy with no other pressing responsibilities like my 9-5 I would devote myself completely and totally to Autism Activism.

In 2013 my brother and I went up to Albany to protest harmful budget cuts for New York State developmentally disabled adults.  See the following links:

I would also develop a photography arts program for intellectually challenged adults. My brother Stephen enjoys taking photos and I’m sure other adults with Autism also have a talent and gift for taking photos. All they need is an opportunity and a sponsor.

As I get closer to retirement expanding my support of people with developmental disabilities is high on my list of goals. Giving a voice to those who have no voice gives my life purpose and meaning.
