site974athleticshoespic1-0164502401db8aaa5e700b877d61771aWhat is the most incredible natural venue that you’ve ever seen in person?

The Grand Canyon back in either 2000 or Summer 2001.

How many siblings do you have? What’s your birth order?

One. My brother Stephen. I am the oldest. Stephen is two years younger than me.

If you were a shoe, what kind would you be and why?

Probably a sneaker or sandals. Not sure what brand. Maybe Reebok or New Balance. Sneakers signal spring, summer and fall. An opportunity to go walking because the weather has warmed up.

Right now I mostly wear my Ugg boots because of the cold and inclement weather. Even though I was born and raised in New York I loathe and despise winter. Looking forward to wearing my sneakers and then my sandals.

What is the strangest/weirdest thing you have ever eaten?

Squid, when I was in Spain.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

That’s difficult to answer because there has been so much upheaval in the country due to these horrible polices which are adversely affecting my Muslim friends. Especially my Iranian girlfriend and co-worker who is now in a bind. She is hurting therefore I am hurting. Best I’ve been able to do so far is to share the situation via my blog and to organize a Prayer Chain for her and all Muslim/Arabic peoples worldwide. All are welcome to join the Prayer Chain no matter what religious faith that you practice.

I have friends from Iran, Iraq and Yemen. I also know people from the Sudan. All honest hardworking, kind, gentle and compassionate folks. So I guess the answer is that I’m glad that I have friends from all races and religions. I extend my Welcome and Love to all! I have been to both Hindu and Buddhist Houses of Worship. So I’m glad that I can pray for all my co-workers and friends.

Can’t say Looking forward to because I don’t know what is going to happen but My prayer, wish and deepest desire is that this Muslim Ban will be lifted and once again my Muslim and Arab friends will be able to travel freely and can stop living in fear.

fruit-vs-fruit-juiceDo you prefer juice or fruit?

A difficult choice. Juice is more convenient because you can carry a bottle of juice with you and it is not messy to eat whereas with fresh fruit you’re peeling the fruit and creating a mess. On the other hand obviously fresh fruit is better because sugar is added to most juices unless you do home juicing of fresh fruit but that too is time consuming. So I’d say juice on the job ~~ fresh fruit at home.

Did you grow up in a small or big town? Did you like it?

Big Town. The Big Apple. Yes I Love it. When I was younger and my Maternal Grandmother and Aunts were alive I used to visit them in Dayton, Ohio. Talk about boring. No I could never live in a rural or suburban community where there is nothing to do and you must drive everywhere. Despite my complaints about the New York City MTA for Non-Drivers like me our Transit system makes New York an excellent place to live.

If you were to paint a picture of your childhood, what colors would you use?

All the Colors of the Rainbow because for me childhood was pretty much carefree. Red, Blue, Green, Purple, Orange… anything bright. It is only when I got to adulthood that things became murky grays and muddiness.

Ways to Relax List: Make a list of what relaxes you and helps you feel calm.

SLEEP!!!!!

Spending time with my brother Stephen who is an Awesome Autism Guy!! Hooray!!

Time with my cat Sylvester.

Writing.

Photography in good weather.

Listening to music.

Watching videos/films/movies on Netflix and YouTube.

Going to any of New York City’s Botanic Gardens when the weather is good.

Hanging out in Central Park.

Spending time exploring the streets, places and faces of Harlem my Dad’s birthplace and where he grew up. Also one of the greatest and best Black History spots!!

Attending Cultural Events in New York.

Going to the beach even though I have not done this in years. With my work schedule virtually no time.

Visiting Museums other than the one that I work for!

Reading even though I’ve had to cut back because of problems with my eyesight.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

Passed an exam and obtained a license required for my job.

As for the upcoming week perhaps I can go back to getting my B 12 shots. I had to stop because of meetings with my brother Stephen’s Group Home/Residence and his training center, then last Friday I had to take that professional exam. Since not receiving my B 12 shots I’ve noticed I’ve been more tired.  Self-care is so difficult because with my long hours at work and caring for Stephen my needs fall to the bottom of the list. Of course as you all know I Love my brother Stephen more than anything so I’m willing to sacrifice my time for his. He is more important. I always wonder about these folks who talk about Self-Care. They must not work, be retired, or are self-employed or just filthy rich!!

Do you sleep with your closet doors open or closed?

Open. My cat Sylvester rests and relaxes in my closet. I have put baby blankets on the left hand side so he can be comfortable.

Do you take the shampoos and conditioner bottles from hotel?

Sometimes but not lately since I have not traveled anywhere in years.

What is your usual bedtime?

3:00 am in the morning since I work nights and don’t get home until 1:30 am or 2:00 am. Sometimes I don’t fall asleep until four or five in the morning. When you work nights you’re ass backwards as my grandfather used to say.

Do you like to use post-it notes?

Not recently. My supervisors use them at work but not me.

When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper?

Years ago. I have arthritis so I can barely sign my name much less write somebody a letter!!

Any phobias?

Yes. Rats. Roaches and now trains since last week’s horrible subway train accident.

How tall are you?

5′ 1″.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

The  MTA, Police and Firefighters who evacuated us from the train. A man had walked across the tracks and was hit. The car I was in began to fill with smoke and the smell of burning flesh. We were trapped for at least an hour. Worst train ride of my life. I’m still shaken. But I still take the subway trains to work everyday.

Gratitude for my brother Stephen. He received an excellent progress report from his training center. Stephen is a genius.

Looking forward to taking an exam on Friday which will give me additional security qualifications.

If you lost a bet and had to dye your hair a color of the rainbow for a week, what color would it be?

Well I already dye my hair. It is Manic Panic Vampire Red which I discussed in a previous post. Once I did try to dye my hair purple/violet but that did not work out. Electric Blue would be fun but I can only do this once I retire. My bosses would not be too thrilled to see me with some weird color shade!

If you could choose one word to focus on for 2017, what would it be?

Hope.

What was one thing you learned last year that you added to your life?

Lose the pride and ask for help. Actually this is an ongoing process that has been taking place for nearly ten years.  I’m not Wonder Woman or Super Woman and as I’ve gotten older there are things I can no longer do on my own. The Aging process changes everything.  One must learn to Accept and Adapt to their limitations.

If life was ‘just a bowl of cherries’… which fruit other than a cherry would you be..?

Pineapple. Hard on the outside. Soft on the inside.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

The Meeting at Stephen’s residence went better than expected. Spoke in person with the Director of the Group Home. Also went to Stephen’s room and went through his things. He does have plenty of clothes. In fact he could open up his own store!!  I think we have ironed out certain issues and my plan is to move forward in 2017.

Next Sunday, Jan 15th I look forward to getting together with my Japanese friend and attending services at her Buddhist Temple.  I took that day off and I hope and pray that it does not snow!!

Would you prefer to receive a unicycle, bicycle, tricycle or motorcycle?

None of the above. As my vision is 20/100 I cannot operate any type of motor vehicle even bikes!! Me riding a bike would be the equivalent of Mr. Magoo driving a car which is another activity I had to give up.

MR-MAGOO-CAR-COLOR-CROP
Mr. Magoo

What is one thing you’d like to accomplish this year?

The most important thing is for me to find an apartment around or before Oct. 1st, 2017. It is not a question of like. Safe, clean housing that is near transportation is a necessity not something I can do without.

What was one of the highlights of 2016 for you?

Being a part of the Paid Family Leave Movement for the State of New York!! I received a personal invitation from Gov. Andrew Cuomo to attend the rally! Paid Family Leave will become active Jan. 2018!!  Gov. Cuomo read the New York Times article about my difficulties being a low wage worker and trying to get time off the care for my brother Stephen who has Autism.  Please click on the second link to get the link for the New York Times article. Again Praise God my workplace situation has improved so some of the issues I faced then are no longer a problem.

I Thank God that Stephen and I Live in a Democrat, Liberal, Progressive state like New York where the Mayor and the Gov. do their best to protect their citizens, provide New Yorkers with benefits that the rest of the country does not have and is a safer space for minorities and immigrants!! New York is and will continue to be a Sanctuary fighting against all Trump policies!! Trump is against Americans who have disabilities.  I am Proud to be a Member of the Resistance!! Yes to Basic Human Rights!!

(7) DeBorah and A Better Balance

Getting Our Blessing!!

Stephen and I continue to be Mighty Warriors and Autism Activist/Advocates!

Would you prefer to fly a kite or fly in a hot air balloon?

I’d take flying the kite as I have a Fear of Heights!! I had enough of helicopters and planes!

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

Glad the holidays are over and behind me. I can now return to some sort of normal life. No special plans for either this week or next week. January tends to be a bad weather month so other than going to work I’m staying in. However lately the weather has been in the 40s and 50s which I hope lasts for the entire winter.
