Beyond the Skinny Branches's avatarBeyond the Skinny Branches

My Dad and I had a very complicated relationship.

There were years we barely spoke, by my choice.

Our relationship was damaged in my early childhood, and afterwards, it was always in one phase or another of dysfunction.

I reached a point in my adulthood where I decided that it was best for my health to remove myself from the dynamic. And I thought that would pretty much be it for the remainder of my life, and I was OK with that decision.

Until, that is, my mother’s cancer.

Life is funny that way. You can think that a part of your life is beyond repair, and then lo and behold, Life brings you the only exact set of circumstances under which you would ever come together again.

In 2005, my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. She underwent radiation therapy (two rounds) and then chemotherapies (2.) I traveled down…

Broadway Junction NYC Rat Stories

“Disgusting, filthy, revolting, repellent, repulsive, sickening, nauseating, stomach-churning, stomach-turning, off-putting, unpalatable, distasteful, foul, nasty, vomitous.”

The Vomitous Express will return for Christmas Season 2017. Now back to the rats.

Countless tragedies and disasters in the making.

https://dailypost.wordpress.com/prompts/disastrous/

The rats were out in full force at Broadway Junction around 1:45 am Wednesday morning as I was coming home from work. Must have been a rat convention. I think more of them showed their pointy snouted demonic faces because the station was being power-washed including the outside and the soapy chemicals had them running trying to escape. These Broadway Junction rats must be on steroids because some of them are nearly bigger than my cat! I just walked in the street until I got to Eastern Parkway. I suppose once mankind annihilates their fellow humans only rats, mice, roaches and water bugs will be left on earth. New York City’s collapsing infrastructure is like living in a surreal futuristic dystopian science fiction horror movie.

Now what if in the year 2525 the rats have evolved into the dominant species on the planet. Full of pride and bravado they proclaim as their leader a pure white rat with red albino eyes possessing a shock of crudely formed orange red hair at the crown of his narrow head. Would that be their downfall?

The rats are flourishing in and around the subways.

Let’s feed GMO Corn to the New York City Rats. Maybe that will get rid of them.

“We Fight for Men and Women Whose Poetry has Not Yet Been Written…” Remembering Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts

Many years ago my Dad and I watched the movie Glory together. At the end of the film our eyes glistened with tears. My Great Great Grandfather William Henry Halstead served with the 29th Colored Regiment CT so Glory has a special place in my heart. Descendants of the 54th and the 29th have gathered together many times to honor our brave ancestors.

Friends of Padre Steve’s World,

When it learned that the Federal Government was recruiting African Americans, both free men and former slaves as soldiers the Confederate Congress issued this proclamation:

“Any negro taken in arms against the Confederacy will immediately be returned to a state of slavery. Any negro taken in Federal uniform will be summarily put to death. Any white officer taken in command of negro troops shall be deemed as inciting servile insurrection and shall likewise be put to death.”

Those who doubt that the leaders of the Confederacy fought the war for any “state right” other than the maintenance and expansion of slavery needs to look at the actions and words of that racist republic.

One hundred and fifty-four years ago today one of those African American regiments went into action against the Confederate works at Battery Wagner, outside of Charleston, South Carolina. The 54th was raised…

AHRC Call Campaign

We need your help to save Medicaid for the nation’s most vulnerable people, including people with disabilities!

Families of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), it is important to tell your legislators that Medicaid Matters to you!

Washington Watch is a NYSARC, Inc. publication regarding important developments on a federal level, as they happen.

July 17, 2017

The Revised Senate Bill Still Includes Devastating Medicaid Cuts

The Senate released their revised Better Care Reconciliation Act last week, but it still includes devastating Medicaid cuts that would have profoundly negative consequences for the Medicaid program and services for people with developmental disabilities. The per capita caps, meager growth rates, and insufficient “carve out for blind and disabled children” remain the same.

The updated CBO score has not yet been released, but it is expected to be about the same. Therefore, this revised health care bill will likely still result in $772 billion in Medicaid cuts, 15 million people losing Medicaid coverage, and a 35% reduction in Medicaid by 2036.

Senate Majority Leader McConnell delayed the vote, originally slated for this week, because Senator McCain is recovering from surgery and unable to vote. Since two Republican senators — Susan Collins of Maine and Rand Paul of Kentucky — have already said they will vote no on the health care bill, McConnell could not risk going forward without McCain. While New York’s Senators are firm no votes, the Senators from the following states are pivotal: Nevada, West Virginia, Alaska, Louisiana, and Ohio.

Join The Arc’s Emergency Letter Writing Campaign

Even though New York’s Senators are no votes, The Arc is asking every state to have as many people as possible send a brief email about how Medicaid Matters to Me to Nicole Jorwic at jorwic@thearc.org. Please include a photo or video in your email and put your state (ie New York) in the subject line. The Arc will hand deliver all the printed messages to the respective Senators this week. All emails must be received by midnight on Wednesday, July 19 to be hand delivered.

Contact House Republicans This Week

If the bill passes the Senate, it will go back to the House for a vote. If you haven’t already done so, please your House Republican Representative and say:

My name is _____________.  I am the parent/relative/friend of a person with developmental disabilities. I am calling to ask you to oppose any legislation that would cut or cap Medicaid. Medicaid funds 90% of essential services for people with developmental disabilities. Medicaid cuts or caps would seriously endanger this population.

Here are the New York Representative phone numbers:

  1. Chris Collins   202-225-5265
  2. John Faso   202-225-5614
  3. Peter T. King   202-225-7896
  4. Tom Reed   202-225-3161
  5. Elise Stefanik   202-225-4611
  6. Claudia Tenney   202-225-3665
  7. Lee Zeldin   202-225-3826

To find the contact information for your US Representative, type in your zip code here.  Ask your friends and relatives to make these calls too!

Posting on Social Media Works

In addition to calling House Republicans, voice your opposition on social media using the following hashtags: #VoteNo#SaveMedicaid, and #NoCutsNoCaps and tweet these legislators directly by clicking on the following links and pressing the button labeled “Tweet to (name of legislator).” Here is a list of some key NY House Republicans who are at risk of supporting the bill if they do not hear enough from their constituents:

  1. CollinsNY27 (Chris Collins)
  2. RepJohnFaso (John Faso)
  3. RepPeteKing (Peter King)
  4. RepTomReed (Tom Reed)
  5. RepStefanik (Elise Stefanik)
  6. RepTenney (Claudia Tenney)
