Connection

I Love the way 23andMe organized my Maternal Bridge linking me to Africa, Native American ancestry and I have some Irish lineage also! (See below chart)

I’ve always felt a special connection to my African co-workers knowing that I too am from the Motherland but my ancestors having been kidnapped and brought by force to what is now known as America some of that connection was lost. My ancestors lost not only their homeland but their language, culture, religion, (Christianity was forced upon both Africans and Native Americans) and traditions. For me the Connection or Bridges to my Ancestral Lands were partially rebuilt when I had my DNA test done a few years ago.

Through my maternal line most of my ancestors were from Mozambique. I belong to the maternal haplogroup L3e2b1a.  Based on their findings I also probably have some Nigerian ancestors.  Thanks to the advent of computers, the Internet and Blogs in my lifetime I can now connect with many of my African Sisters and Brothers across the globe. Exciting!!

When I pass through the African Art and Egyptian Wings of the museum sometimes I can feel the spirits of the artifacts reaching out to me. I look at items that once had spiritual significance and are now artworks and see my past, present and future. Sometimes I even see my face.

Having Native American Ancestry from both my mothers and fathers sides I’ve always felt a deep spiritual connection to Native Americans, the traditions and the belief systems.

So I have the bloods of African, Native American and Irish Queens running through my veins but as the end result says on the below Ancestry Composition I am 100% DeBorah Ann Palmer.

Black HerStory Month

In the USA March is Women’s History Month. Borrowing a phrase I heard used I Declare and Decree this Black HerStory Month. Twenty-Eight or in the case of this year 29 days is not enough to celebrate the achievements of African Americans nor do we often hear about the accomplishments or even acknowledge Black Women so I Proclaim March Black HerStory Month.

First Honors and Praises to the Our Black Family Matriarchs. Our Queens!  From what I’ve been told I am very Blessed and Fortunate to have family photos from my Dad’s side dating back to the 19th century.  My Paternal Grandmother Eva Sophronia Gordon Palmer kept meticulous records recording the name of each ancestor on the back of the photos. The one Woman ancestor photo that does not have a name is a tintype and at some point the name either fell off or became detached.

I have only a few photos of my Maternal Women ancestors as my mother’s family did not have the money to either purchase cameras or pay to have their photos professionally taken. All have now gone onto to Glory and passed into eternity but even the 19th Century Queens who I did not get a chance to meet in person I carry not only their DNA but their strength, faith and fortitude to preserve in and over all circumstances.  Ancestral Memories flow through my veins.

Oh Great Goddess Oshun Let Me Come to Your Waters that You May Wash My Soul.

Capture me in Your Ecstasies!  Wash over Me washing away the filth of modern life, Corporate America, capitalism, greed, anxiety and pain. Flow through me Queen of the Rivers with your cleansing floods. Casting off shadows I dive deep into your essence. Through the sweetest of baptisms I am made whole.  I hear the voices of my ancestors calling me. Calling me back home.

My mind touches the picture. Spirit possess me. Visions reach across centuries and your mind is at one with mine. I feel your emotions. Your fears. Your voice crying out across time. Ancestral spirits rise up from seas, oceans, rivers crossing the veil to those still earthbound crying, “Hear Our Voices! Be Our Conduit to the Future!”  Orisha speak through me! Orisha Speak through me!

Middle Passage and Trail of Tears join forces!  Come forth with Power and Grace!

I eagerly await your knowledge, wisdom and energies O’ Goddess of Creativity!

Female Ancestor from my Dad's side, Name lost to Time
Ancestor known only to God.

Queen Seshat Egyptian Goddess of Scribes
Queen Seshat Egyptian Goddess of Scribes

It was in the early times that the Priestess of Papyrus placed the Holy writ before me and bade me write the vision and make it plain so that our people who read may run with the vision. You hold the pen of a ready writer. Hieroglyphics danced before me then carried me to the Temple for sanctification. Pierced with the hollow reeds that rose up from the Nile filled with the ancestors’ blood the Scrivener was born.

Books bit me as a child. I was infected with wordplay and phrases began to drip from my lips and out through my fingers. A light went on in my brain and I was never the same yet all the better for books piercings. Dewey Decimal was a Vampire more worthy than Dracula.

Chosen by the Muses who have awakened me early in the pre-dawn morning and kept me going until Luna takes her place in the night skies. Athena, Isis, Lakshmi, Benzaiten, have anointed me as the High Priestess Oracle as I take my place in the Council of Elders. I ascend my Throne the sacred parchments are placed before me and I begin.

Jump Sankofa Kindred????????

Jump Sankofa Kindred????????

Sankofa Bird
Sankofa Bird

If I Jump back into time. Jump the broom back Mother Africa who will I find? And why do the ancestors call my name?

Though I’m separated from the Motherland for over 200 years there is that spiritual umbilical cord that binds me to Mother Africa. A Mother always cries for her lost children.

Was I being and speaking Yoruba, Igbo, Bantu, Akan, Twi, Tsonga, Nyungwe, Ronga, Ngoni, Chopi, Tonga, Ndau, Tswa, Swahili, Makhuwa, Sena?

In a distant time was I Nzinga Mbande Warrior Monarch of the Mbundu people? How many souls are in my spirit and what bloods run through my veins?

Perhaps my ancestors have chosen me their earthly Sankofa bird to reach back and pull their souls from suffering and oblivion. They are saying, “Remember us!” Redeem us Dear Sister that our deaths were not in vain. Their voices cry out to me from the depths of the oceans. Their spilled consecrated blood from hallowed ground. Yes I hear your cries sacred ones and deliverance is on the way.
Pilgrimage is nigh on Sankofa bird wings Oh land of my ancestors!
